Positive Buzz at VCIR
Despite the backdrop of the current economic climate, there’s a clearly positive feeling at VCIR. Perhaps this is to be expected at a gathering focused on entrepreneurship, but while there’s an undercurrent of realism there is a consistent tone of optimism here at the conference (this is very apparent if you’re looking over the VCIR Winter Twitter feed). From businesses that are focused on the new energy economy to companies innovating new web technologies there is a clear sense that now is a good time to be working on early stage businesses.
Going into the conference I wasn’t sure how the poor economic environment would effect the conference and the mood of the attendees. There’s plenty of talk about what’s happening in the national and global financial markets but there are many people talking about how they are taking advantage of the current market environment (not just companies, but service providers and investors). This isn’t being talked about under the false guise of "recession proof businesses" but rather in a real discussion of alternative business models, different ways to access customers and capital and some unique ideas on how to deploy venture money.
